NYS Gets Rain to Replenish Groundwater Reserves

New York had an average of 4.0 days suitable for field work. Weather varied greatly throughout the state this week. Rainfall was reported in all regions of the state with several areas in the northern region reporting more than 5 inches of rain. Previously drought-stricken areas also reported some rainfall but they continued to be listed in D3 (extreme drought) category. Hard frost was also reported from several areas of the state but no significant crop damage was reported. Heavy rain halted harvesting of crops but the rain was needed to replenish ground water reserves.

Producers continued harvesting corn and soybeans. Yields varied depending on soil type and rain received.

Not much hay cutting was reported because of the rain and hay cutting is expected to be winding down in the coming weeks.

Apple and the majority of the grape harvest are winding down as well. Blocks of later ripening varies of grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon are expected to be harvested in the coming week.

Field activities for the week included fruit harvesting, repair and maintenance of equipment.
