New York Sees More FFA Chapters Growing Across State
New York Ag Connection - 03/21/2019

State Agriculture Commissioner Richard Ball and Senate Agriculture Committee Chair Jen Metzger will join New York State FFA (formerly, Future Farmers of America) state officers, students, administrators, and teachers at Rondout Valley High School March 21 at 10:30 a.m. to present the newest FFA chapter with their official charter. Rondout Valley High School is located at 122 Kyserike Rd, Accord, NY 12404.

The Rondout High School FFA Chapter is one of 10 new FFA chapters that have launched in the 2018-2019 school year, a 10% increase in new FFA chapters this year, and a 28% increase in new chapters over the last three years. FFA membership has increased to approximately 7,000 members statewide, up from 4,500 members.

Ball said, "Agricultural education is perhaps one of the most important ways that we can impact the future of our industry. I am proud of the growth we are seeing with our FFA chapters--these students are our next generation farmers, veterinarians, food business owners, and leaders in agriculture-related careers."

Metzger said, "I am so pleased to see the FFA program coming to the Rondout Valley, where my children attend school. As Chair of the Agriculture Committee, I am a strong supporter of this program because of its incredible value to our students' educational experience and to sustaining agriculture in New York in the long run. The integration of agriculture into the curriculum provides valuable hands-on learning and is so important for engaging the next generation of farmers and agricultural producers."

To advance agricultural education across the State, New York committed a record $3.6 million in recent years for agricultural education programs, including adding new FFA chapters across the State, working towards doubling the number of certified agricultural educators through programs offered through NYAAE, and supporting a state-of-the-art test kitchen and food science lab. In addition to the growth of the FFA in New York State, this year, New York Agriculture in the Classroom programming reached approximately 170,000 students, and New York State teachers earned over 2,500 hours of professional development courses on how to include food and agriculture education in their classrooms.
