NYS Farmer Worried About Long-Term Crop Damage
New York Ag Connection - 04/17/2018

New York averaged 1 day suitable for field work, according to USDA's National Ag Statistics Service.

Temperatures ranged from 1 degrees to 14 degrees below normal. Weekly precipitation ranged from 0.00 to 2.3 inches.

This past week, cold temperatures continued and a reported ice storm caused much concern over much of the state. Producers were concerned about long term damage done to crops as little to no activity was accomplished and the ground was saturated with more rain forecasted.

Crews on Long Island finished tying vines with reports of bud swell. Apple bud development was slow.

Maple syrup yields were reported as being low in some areas with sugaring also slow or stopped.

Broome County; Maria Heath: Ground still cold with no field work being done yet. Expecting another cold week.

Cayuga County; Keith Severson, Cornell Coop Extension Cayuga: Still cold and wet to consider activities.

Cayuga County; Colleen Cargile, Cayuga County FSA: Spring still has not arrived here in Cayuga County. We continue to see below average temperatures along with frequent precipitation. The ground is saturated and it does not appear that spring tillage and planting will begin any time soon. The forecast shows substantial amounts of precipitation for today and tomorrow (Friday and Saturday). Temperatures are predicted to drop significantly on Saturday, consequently parts of the county could see freezing rain and ice, which could potentially be damaging. Hoping for warmer temperatures and dry weather sometime in the near future!

Clinton/ Essex counties; Michael Basedow: Cold temperatures continue to slow apple bud development.

Cortland/Tompkins counties; Jennifer Doty: Mostly continued cold, wet weather. Some ground work prep has begun. Maple season is ending, most reporting low yield.

Delaware County; Mariane Kiraly, Cornell Cooperative Extension: Cold and wet.

Essex County; David Reckahn: Snow and rain to end the week still no spring field work started.

Franklin County; Jennifer Bosley, Franklin County FSA: Fields are covered in snow and ice. Spring tillage and plantings will continue to be delayed. The cold temperatures have either slowed or stopped sugaring depending on location.

Genesee/Niagara/Orleans counties; Nathan R Herendeen: Rain, sleet, snow stopped what limited field activities were underway - all week. The same continues this week. Wet area drown outs became worse in wheat fields.

Herkimer/Oneida counties; Devon Kenny: Weather has continued to be colder than average. The entire area was also hit by a severe ice storm on 4/14-15 which brought accumulations of 1/4 to 1/2 an inch of ice. High winds accompanied with ice accumulations have made many limbs come down.

Lewis County; Joe Lawrence: Very little activity as cold temperatures continue. A little manure may have been spread. Late week rain and freezing rain over the weekend.

Livingston County; Dean R Pendergast: Field conditions remain poor, limiting spring tillage and manure application.

Ontario County; Joann Rogers, County Executive Director FSA: Ontario County experienced another cold damp week. A limited amount of field work and some manure spreading occurred. Orchards are pruning and maple sap is still being collected.

Oswego County; Ellen deMey: Cold, wet weather has continued with no relief in sight. There has been measurable snowfall and temperatures have continued to stay well below normal.

Schuyler/Seneca counties; Kathy Mastellar, CED, Seneca/Schuyler FSA: Temperatures were still cool this week. There was a heavy frost the morning of 4/12, then 50 degrees on 4/13, then overnight on 4/14 there was a minor ice storm. No field work is being done.

Suffolk County; Alice V Wise: Long Island vineyard crews are finishing up with tying vines. There is slight bud swell.

Yates County; Amy Parmelee, FSA: The weather has continued to be below normal temperatures with rain. The coming week's forecast is much more rain and below normal temperatures.
