NYS Commercial Red Meat Up 15 Percent in April

Commercial red meat production for New York totaled 3.3 million pounds in April, up 15 percent from the 2.9 million pounds produced in April 2015, according to Blair Smith, state statistician, of the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), New York Field Office.

Cattle slaughter totaled 2,900 head, up 7 percent from April 2015. The average live weight was up 37 pounds from the previous year at 1,200 pounds.

Calf slaughter totaled 2,900 head, 3 percent below April 2015. The average live weight was up 3 pounds from last year, at 167 pounds.

Hog slaughter totaled 3,900 head, up 26 percent from April 2015. The average live weight was up 19 pounds from the previous year, at 263 pounds.

Sheep and lamb slaughter totaled 7,500 head, 39 percent above last year. The average live weight was 91 pounds, down 1 pound from April a year ago.

April 2015 contained 22 weekdays (including 0 holidays) and 4 Saturdays. April 2016 contained 21 weekdays (including 0 holidays) and 5 Saturdays.
