NYS Farmers, Growers Assessing Storm Damage to Crops
New York Ag Connection - 05/23/2017

New York averaged 4.5 days suitable for field work last week.

New York remained drought free throughout as some scattered showers and storms moved through various counties. The average weekly temperatures ranged from 1 to 10 degrees above normal. Weekly precipitation ranged from 0.02 to 0.76 inches.

Growers attempted to make up for lost time the prior week, moving field work along quickly, planting corn, soybean, and oats prior to rainfall later in the week.

Alfalfa and hay were harvested and with positive reports on quality.

Some areas experienced storms with high winds and hail, which knocked out power for three days in some areas. Although no crop damage was immediately reported, fruit growers and producers were reviewing potential damage. In some areas the warmer temperatures and winds helped keep fields from becoming too wet though other areas did have some excess cold, wet weather.
