Commercial Red Meat Up 19 Percent in May

Commercial red meat production for New York totaled 3.4 million pounds in May, up 19 percent from the 2.8 million pounds produced in May 2015, according to Blair Smith, state statistician, of the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), New York Field Office.

Cattle slaughter totaled 3,100 head, up 11 percent from May 2015. The average live weight was up 48 pounds from the previous year at 1,188 pounds.

Calf slaughter totaled 2,600 head, 8 percent above May 2015. The average live weight was up 18 pounds from last year, at 189 pounds.

Hog slaughter totaled 4,100 head, up 32 percent from May 2015. The average live weight was up 13 pounds from the previous year, at 254 pounds.

Sheep and lamb slaughter totaled 5,400 head, 32 percent above last year. The average live weight was 105 pounds, down 3 pounds from May a year ago.

May 2015 contained 21 weekdays (including 1 holiday) and 5 Saturdays. May 2016 contained 22 weekdays (including 1 holiday) and 4 Saturdays.
