Commercial Red Meat Up 19 Percent in June

Commercial red meat production for New York totaled 3.7 million pounds in June, up 19 percent from the 3.1 million pounds produced in June 2015, according to Blair Smith, state statistician, of the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), New York Field Office.

Cattle slaughter totaled 3,300 head, up 6 percent from June 2015. The average live weight was up 54 pounds from the previous year at 1,195 pounds.

Calf slaughter totaled 2,700 head, 35 percent above June 2015. The average live weight was down 18 pounds from last year, at 180 pounds.

Hog slaughter totaled 5,100 head, up 38 percent from June 2015. The average live weight was up 16 pounds from the previous year, at 245 pounds.

Sheep and lamb slaughter totaled 6,200 head, 19 percent above last year. The average live weight was 102 pounds, down 3 pounds from June a year ago.

June 2015 contained 22 weekdays (including 0 holiday) and 4 Saturdays. June 2016 contained 22 weekdays (including 0 holiday) and 4 Saturdays.
