New York Crops, Fruits, Vegetables Make Good Progress

According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service in New York, there were 6 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending Sunday.

Topsoil moisture supplies were 4 percent very short, 37 percent short, 52 percent adequate, and 7 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were 4 percent very short, 13 percent short, 80 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus.

Apples in full bloom were reported at 95 percent, up from 88 percent last week, while New York peaches and pears were at 100 percent and 97 percent, respectively.

Fifty-nine percent of the barley was headed, up from 37 percent last week. Oats headed was 54 percent, up from 28 percent last week.

Corn emerged was reported at 97 percent and its average height was 22 inches. With 99 percent of the soybean crop now planted, 89 percent was reported emerged. Winter wheat headed was 96 percent.

New York's vegetable crops were reported as 71 percent of cabbage planted, 96 percent of potatoes were planted, 55 percent of snap beans were in the ground and 83 percent of sweet corn was planted.

First cutting of alfalfa hay was 93 percent complete with 21 percent of second cutting now complete. Other hay harvested for first cutting was 83 percent finished.
