Some N.Y. Counties Get Needed Rain; Others Still at D2, D3
New York Ag Connection - 08/23/2016

New York had an average of 6 days suitable for field work. Weather varied greatly throughout the state. Several counties reported receiving some much needed rain while areas in western New York are still listed as D2 or D3 on the US drought monitor.

In counties experiencing the extremely dry weather, crops are stressed and yields are expected to suffer. Producers in those areas are concerned over poor corn crop and lack of re-growth on hay crops.

Many regions that received beneficial rain in the past few weeks reported crop conditions improving. Pasture and hay re-growth is reported as good. Corn is reported as done growing in some areas and silage harvested will begin this week.

Fruit size also continued to improve in areas that received some rain, however, large amounts of apples are reported as poor in conditions due to several hail events in July and August. Peach, blueberry, day-neutral strawberry and summer raspberry harvest continued this week. Vineyards continued to deploy bird netting and are reporting grapes ripening quickly due to dry weather. Apple maggots and Spotted Wing Drosophila continue being a challenge, however, most areas seem to be containing pest issues.

Field activities for the week included small fruit harvesting, pest control, applying pesticides and manure, irrigation, repair and maintenance of equipment.
