The Cornell Cooperative Extension associations in Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties are inviting youth, ages 5 to 19, to register for fun learning activities through After School programs and 4-H clubs. The new year for the programming begins Oct. 1.

Cornell Cooperative Extension staff work with school districts, volunteers, small family groups, and corporate supporters to provide a diverse range of learning experiences.

After School programs engage nearly 1,000 students across the region. Programs at 23 schools include a focus on mandated STEM: science, engineering, technology and math education, and healthy living.

More than 125 4-H clubs with more than 2,000 members focus on everything from the traditional dairy, horse and small activities to babysitting, birding, music, robotics, and woodworking interests.

Extension initiatives for youth in 2016 include:

-- a woodworking club for teens in Clinton County

-- continuation of a two-county bluegrass music club in Clinton and Essex counties

-- programs for at risk youth in Franklin County

-- resumption of two youth-assisted research projects with Cornell University in Jefferson County

-- two new workforce development clubs, including the first-of-its-kind-for-New-York-State 4-H welding club in Lewis County, and

-- the new Agricultural Studies Academy that just welcomed its first high school students in St. Lawrence County.

Youth interested in participating in After School programs or joining a 4-H club, adult volunteers, and corporate sponsors are encouraged to contact the local Cornell Cooperative Extension office: Clinton County: 518-561-7450, Essex County: 518-962-4810, Franklin County: 518-483-7403, Jefferson County: 315-788-8450, Lewis County: 315-376-5270; St. Lawrence County: 315-379-9192. Training is available for adults interested in becoming volunteers and club leaders.
