NYS Harvesting Grapes for White Wine
New York Ag Connection - 09/27/2016

New York had an average of 6.0 days suitable for field work. A few areas reported light rain and cooler weather this past week, with some still being in a D3 drought category. Areas that received light rain reported around 0.5" of much needed precipitation, helping with soil moisture. Several areas have experienced their first frosting of the season, but no crop damage reported yet.

Corn silage harvesting continued this week, with several areas reporting lower yields and good moisture condition. Soybean harvesting has begun, with the crop continuing to change color and reports of low yields. Hay regrowth and yields have been reported as good or excellent in most regions containing the crop. Winter wheat planting is in fullswing, with the nice weather and good moisture producing ideal conditions.

Vineyards continue harvesting grapes for white wine, with Chardonnay harvesting expected in the coming weeks.

Harvest of McIntosh and Honeycrisp apple varieties continued throughout the week, with Cortland, Empire and Macoun harvesting expected to begin soon.

Field activities for the week included tillage, fruit harvesting, irrigation, repair and maintenance of equipment.
